Abstract

806,837. Glass. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO. Ltd. April 16, 1957 [April 13, 1956], No. 11334/56. Class 56. Glass for transmitting infra-red radiation consists substantially wholly of calcium and gallium oxides, with the gallium oxide being between 59 and 69 per cent. weight of the total, but up to 8 per cent. of the gallium oxide can be replaced by silica. A particular example which is transparent and pale yellow is made from a batch composition, by weight, CaO 33À2; Ga 2 O 3 59À8; Si O2 7À0. This melts at 1400‹C, and anneals at 700‹C. A sample 4 mm. thick transmits 60-70 per cent. of incident radiation between 3À4 and 4À6 micron. Its refractive index is approximately 1À7.
