Abstract
Aldrin (i.e. a mixture substantially consisting of 1:2:3:4:10:10 - hexachloro - 1:4 : 4a: 5:8:8a - hexahydro - 1:4:5:8 - endo, exodimethanonaphthalene) is prepared by the Diels-Alder addition of hexachlorocyclopentadiene and bicyclo-(2:2:1)-2:5-heptadiene in the presence of a hydrogen chloride acceptor. Specified hydrogen chloride acceptors are epoxy compounds such as ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, epichlorhydrin, glycidol and glycidyl ethers and esters; nitrogen bases such as urea, thiourea, hexamethylenetetramine and mono-, di- and tri-alkylamines; alkali metal and alkaline earth metal bicarbonates, carbonates and basic phosphates and alkali metal hydroxides such as sodium hydroxide. Between 0.1 and 1 per cent of the hydrogen chloride acceptor based on the weight of reactants is used. The process gives aldrin of high melting-point and improved solid properties. In examples aldrin is prepared by reacting bicyclo-(2:2:1)-2:5-heptadiene and hexachlorocyclopentadiene in the presence of epichlorhydrin or sodium hydroxide and the products compared with that obtained when no hydrogen chloride acceptor is used.
