Abstract

A cyclohexanone-methanol resin, an alkyl cyclohexanone-methanol resin, a cyclohexanoneformaldehyde resin or an alkyl cyclohexanoneformaldehyde resin each containing hydroxyl groups, is reacted with an epoxy compound. The alkyl cyclohexanone resins are advantageously prepared from methyl cyclohexanones e.g. an isomeric mixture of ortho-, meta- and paramethyl cyclohexanone. Epoxy compounds specified are epichlorohydrin, ethyleneoxide, propylene oxide and epoxy resins. It is also possible to use alkylene oxides formed during the reaction e.g. ethylene oxide from ethylene carbonate. The modification is carried out in the presence of catalysts e.g. sodium methoxide, boron trifluoride. The reaction with ethylene carbonate is carried out in the presence of a strong alkali catalyst such as sodium hydroxide or potassium carbonate. Examples are given of the preparation of a methyl cyclohexanone-methanol resin followed by modification with ethylene carbonate and ethylene oxide and of the preparation of a cyclohexane-one methanol resin which is modified with ethylene carbonate. The products are useful in surface coating materials such as lacquers or paints. Specification 864,541 is referred to.
