Abstract

1379025 Mono- and di-alkoxylated acetylenic diols CANNING & CO Ltd 16 May 1972 [20 May 1971] 16091/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] A mixture comprising mono- and disubstituted acetylenic diols plus unreacted diol is obtained by reacting an acetylenic diol and an oxirane in a molar ratio of diol to oxirane of from 1 : 0À5 to 1 : 0À95, optionally in the presence of a basic catalyst and of a solvent which is inert (e.g. an ether) or substantially inert (e.g. H 2 O, alcohols) under the reaction conditions. Examples relate to the reaction products of (1) 2-butyne-1,4-diol and propylene oxide, (2) 2-butyne-1,4-diol and butylene oxide, (3) 2 - butyne - 1,4 - diol and epichlorohydrin, (4) 3-hexyne-2,4-diol and propylene oxide, (5) 2-butyne-1,4-diol and butyl glycidyl ether, and (6) 2-butyne-1,4-diol and ethylene oxide and their use as secondary brighteners in nickel plating. The mono- and di-propoxylated butyne diol products of (1) are isolated.
