Abstract
806,474. Electric incandescent lamps. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES), Ltd., J. June 4, 1956 [June 7, 1955], No. 16289/55. Class 39(2) In order to dip the beam of light emitted by a road vehicle lamp comprising a lamp bulb associated with a reflector, the filament e is resiliently supported within the bulb, and magnetizable means are provided for moving the filament to an alternative position within the bulb. As shown, a pair of current-conducting wires b arranged parallel with each other are looped over at their ends within the bulb and secured by an intermediate insulating bridge member c to a pair of filament-supporting wires d, and another pair of wires f extending rearwardly and downwardly from the bridge c carry a piece of soft iron g between them at their outer ends. Another piece of soft iron h is embedded in an insulating plug a within the lamp cap. Magnetization of the iron parts may be effected by passing a current through a coil i surrounding the usual bulb holder. The filament normally occupies a position relative to the focus of the reflector j such that a horizontal beam is emitted by the lamp. To dip the beam the coil i is energized through a switch operable by the driver, whereby the magnetic attraction set up between the iron pieces in the bulb causes the movable piece g to move towards the fixed piece h, thereby moving the filament to the dipped-beam position.
