Abstract

806,427. Percussive drills; grinding. TECHNICAL CERAMICS Ltd. Feb. 27, 1957 [Feb. 28, 1956], No. 6638/57. Classes 60 and 124. A method of cutting holes in hard, brittle, material comprises vibrating a tool at ultrasonic frequencies and at the same time rotating the tool about its axis. As shown, a tool tip 20 is attached to a double cone horn 15 fixed to a hollow transducer 11, excited through contacts 16, 17, and made of barium titanate. A spindle 13 of an electric motor 12 may extend through the transducer and be threaded into the horn, which may have a cylindrical portion 23 situated between the cones forming a seating for a ball race 24 fixed in an arm 25 of a stand 22. An abrasive slurry may be fed to the tool tip.
