[Also in Groups XIX and XXXVIII] The voltage output from a tacho-generator (not shown) is displayed on a valve voltmeter 50 through a circuit which compresses the higher part of the scale and gives the same order of accuracy over the whole range. The operation of the circuit depends on the fact that the generator output (connected via lines 32) varies in voltage and frequency simultaneously, both being proportional to the r.p.m. At low outputs C has a much higher impedance than R and the network has very little effect on the voltmeter reading. As the output increases C passes progressively more current and the meter begins to read low. When the impedance of C is much less than that of R the circuit C1R1 takes over as C1 begins to shunt R1, and at still higher outputs C2R2 becomes effective. Any number of such CR circuits may be added to extend the principle to still higher frequencies. Normal shunts R3 and R4 may also be included. The filters may contain inductive elements.
