In a wide range temperature compensated expanded scale A.C. measuring circuit the test voltage is applied to an attenuator (Fig. 1, not shown), which may comprise a complex impedance network adapted to remove unwanted harmonics, having a temperature coefficient such as to compensate for temperature variation errors in the remaining apparatus, to feed a rectifier followed by a filter removing the A.C. component and producing a unidirectional voltage proportional to the average or peak value of the test voltage according to the filter time constant. This voltage is applied over a second attentuator (which may be omitted) to a zero suppression circuit comprising a non- linear bridge or a subtraction network comparing the filtered rectifier output with a stabilized reference voltage to produce an output current r=K(E in -X), where E in is the test voltage, K is a constant, and X is the test voltage value corresponding to zero indication; which deflects an indicating or recording instrument compensated for temperature variation by a series thermistor. In Fig. 2, the test voltage 9 is applied over range switchable attenuating resistance 10 to a diode bridge rectifier; the resistance value being large compared with the forward diode resistance to reduce the effect of temperature variations on the rectifier output, which is smoothed by capacitor 15 to a value proportional to the average of the test input. The second attenuator is omitted and the smoothed voltage is applied to a bridge comprising resistors 16, 17, 18 and Zener diode 19 functioning as a non- linear resistor, whose output represents the required suppressed zero function of the test input due to balance of the bridge for a particular input value and progressive unbalance at other values, and is applied to a D.C. meter 20 in series with a temperature compensating resistor 21.
