Abstract

<PICT:0805967/III/1> <PICT:0805967/III/2> In a mastic applicator and finishing tool comprising a tool body A movable over a surface 39 the body has a leading end and a trailing end, a mastic receiving recess A1 having an opening 5 through which the mastic is moved and a trowelling bar L forming an edge for the opening 5 and having a concave edge facing the surface 39. The two ends of the bar L form two points of support between the body A and the surface 39 and a third point of support is positioned adjacent the leading edge of the body so that the tool body can accommodate itself to any irregularities in the surface. This third point of support is formed by rollers 55 mounted on the ends of a lever V which is pivoted to a fulcrum plate C secured to the body A. The body A comprises side walls 1, 2, an arcuate trailing end wall 4, a rigid bottom wall 3 in which the opening 5 is formed and a plate B fulcrumed at 7 to the wall 3 for forcing mastic T from the recess A1 out through the opening 5. Coil springs D retain the plate B in its normal position. The trowelling bar L is flexible and is carried in a groove 51 formed in a flexible guide K. As the bar L becomes worn it is advanced by screws 52. Wear shoes N are secured to members M fixed to the sides 1, 2 of the body A. The wear shoes extend under the flexible guide K for holding it against accidental removal. When using the device, the mastic T is fed into the recess A1 through the opening 5 and the tool is applied to the wall surface 39, as shown in Fig. 2. The operator presses on a handle F for moving the mastic pressing plate B down into the recess A1 against the action of the springs D to force the mastic out through the opening 5 as the body is moved over the surface 39. The crown effect given to the mastic deposited on the surface 39 may be adjusted by means of a manually slidable wedge S mounted on a pressure-rod Q which has one end bearing on the centre portion of the flexible guide K. A coil spring R is mounted on the rod Q with one end secured to the rod. The wedge S varies the compression in the spring. When the operator wants to apply mastic to a ceiling he swings the housing A into the desired angular position with respect to the handle F and then he moves a hand grip member J towards the handle and causes a projection 26 on a bell-crank lever H to enter any desired recess 24 in a quadrant G mounted on the plate B. This will hold the handle in a rigid position with respect to the plate B and since this plate is held in normal position by the coil springs D, the housing A will be held in a fixed angular position with respect to the handle F.
