A label dispenser has switch means controlling the feed of a web carrying one or more rows of labels in spaced relation, the switch being opened by a feeler responsive to the position of a label beneath it. The web is unwound from a roll by a motor driven roller, and passes round a peeling edge in the visual manner. The roll R is'held freely in a depression in the top of the dispenser and may be located by a plate 11 slidable on a rod 13 to accommodate various web widths. The web W carrying five rows of labels L, passes over a table 14 with a heater 15 beneath it, the latter assisting separation of the labels from the web, and round a peeling edge 16. The edge carries a series of rotatable balls 17 which slightly corrugate the web to assist separation. The web then runs between a roller 21 driven by a motor 22, and a roller 31 carried by springs 32 attached to the front plate 5 of the dispenser. The plate 5 has three positions about its pivot 6 viz., a fully open position in which it is horizontal, permitting positioning of a new web, a " stand by " position in which the rollers 21, 31 are just separated, and a working position in which these rollers grip the web. The last two positions are controlled by a cam 36 engaging a latch 33 attached to the plate 5, the cam being carried on a manually operated shaft 37. The switch means comprises an adjustable fixed contact 55 and a moveable contact 67, the latter being carried on an arm 68 attached to feeler means 72-74 contacting the web and labels. The feeler comprises balls 73 which, when both resting on a label, maintain the switch closed. They also retain the switch closed if no label is beneath them or if an approaching label tilts their holder anticlockwise. Fig. 6, by raising the inner ball. The switch and feeler means are mounted for sideways movement as a whole along rods 58, 59, the latter being screwed and rotatable by knobs 61 to position the feeler on the desired row of labels.
