Abstract

805,802. Examining solids by X-rays &c. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 26, 1956 [Sept. 26, 1955], No. 29398/56. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XL (a)] In a system for examining a solid specimen 25, comprising a radiant energy source S, a fluorescent screen 20 for converting radiant energy to visible light, and a T.V. camera &c., 23 for detecting the light rays, the screen 20 has a convex surface 22 so curved that any light rays arising in the screen and travelling along a straight line through the source are refracted to pass through the optical centre C of the detector, thus producing a point image on the T.V. screen. The opposite surface 21 is preferably concave, having its centre of curvature at the source S, or alternatively being curved similarly to the surface 22 so that all X-rays &c., passing through the screen traverse substantially the same distance. The fluorescent screen may be a thallium-activated sodium iodide crystal with or without a metallic film 28 on its concave surface to reflect forward light rays travelling back towards the source. In a modification, Fig. 4, the screen comprises a liquid scintillation medium 40 in a container having an optically transparent convex wall 43.
