805,699. Injection-moulding knitting needles. READ, G.A. Nov. 15, 1956 [Nov. 15, 1955], No. 32588/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VIII] A method of moulding knitting needles with integral heads and shafts comprises injecting thermoplastic material, e.g., polystyrene, into the head-forming portion of a two part mould assembly having a sprue passage such that the surplus plastic material is joined by a thin neck to the needle head and is easily broken away. A mould in four parts 4, 5, 9, 10 has a groove 6 tapered at one end, with an air vent 7, to form the needle shaft, a recess 11 with tapered sprue opening 14 to form the needle head, and a feed channel 12 for the thermoplastic material. The parts 4, 5, 9, 10 may be clamped together in any known manner. The formed needle is attached at its head to the surplus plastic material fed into the channel 12 by a thin tapered neck which is formed in the sprue opening 14 and is easily broken. A multicavity mould, Fig. 4, (not shown) is described in which a central feed channel supplies a number of cavities.
