805,452. Fluid pressure-operated valves. PARKER - HANNIFIN CORPORATION [formerly PARKER APPLIANCE CO.]. July 4, 1956, No. 20651/56. Class 135. A valve between the compressor of an aeroplane jet engine and the leading edge of the engine comprises an inlet 2 in a casing having an outlet 3, two cylindrical valve members 16, 17 biased to engage each other and to engage the valve member 16 with a seat 8 by two springs 19, 23, and a vent 28 leading to the atmosphere through an electromagnetically-operated pilot valve 38. A bleed hole 22, 21 in the head of the valve member 16 allows compressed air from the inlet 2 to enter the chamber 26 formed by the two valve members. When the pilot valve 38 is closed, compressed air enters through the bleed hole 22, 21 to the chamber 26 to build up pressure therein so that the valve member 16 is forced firmly against the valve seat 8 and the valve is closed. When the electromagnetically controlled pilot valve 38 is opened, the pressure in the chamber 26 forces air out through the vent 28 and through holes 33 to the atmosphere, so that the pressure of the compressed air in the inlet 2 blows the valve member 16 off its seat 8 against the bias of the springs 19, 23. The valve casing 1 contains a cylindrical liner 6, having radial passages 31 vented to the atmosphere so that pressure does not build up in the chamber 30 between the valve members 16, 17 and the liner.
