Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula ROOC.(CH2)4.CH(SR1).CH2.COOH (wherein R is a hydrocarbon group and R1 is an acyl group), and their preparation by reacting the corresponding 7-monoester of 7-carboxy-2-heptenoic acid with a thiolcarboxylic acid R1SH. The reaction may be carried out in a solvent such as benzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, toluene, dioxan or ethanol at temperatures of from room temperature up to about 70 DEG C. In examples: (1) thioacetic acid and 7-carboethoxy-2-heptenoic acid at room temperature give 3-acetylthio-7-carboethoxyheptanoic acid; (2) thiobutyric acid and 7-carbophenoxy-2-heptenoic acid in benzene at room temperature give 3 - butyrylthio - 7 - carbophenoxyheptanoic acid. Reference is also made to the preparation of 3-propionylthio - 7 - carbomethoxy -, 3 - benzoylthio - 7 - carbopropoxy - and 3 - phenylacetylthio - 7 - carboethoxy - heptanoic acids and to starting materials in which R has the additional values of benzyl and vinyl and R1 has the additional values of valeryl and hexanoyl.
