Abstract

805,235. Laminates. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Nov. 28, 1955 [Feb. 25, 1955], No. 33986/55 Class 140. [Also in Groups IX and XVI] Moulded, fabric-surfaced car mats are made by providing a laminate including a stretchable fabric, to form the wear surface, and a backing of mouldable material adhering to said fabric, pressing, by means of fluid pressure and in the cold state, said laminate against the surface of a forming mould and setting said backing, on the form, by means of heat. The mouldable material may be of rubber, vinyl resins, rubber-resin blends as in Specification 632,722, [Croup IV (a)], or butadiene-acrylonitrile, butadiene-styrene blends. A preformed layer of sponge rubber a layer of sponge-forming rubber stock or a layer of felt may be applied to the mouldable layer. The stretchable fabric may be one in which are included elastic strands, or may be a knitted fabric which may have pile-like loops, e.g. as described in Specification 780,048. Blanks are formed either by uniting sheets of the materials with adhesive or by continuously laminating webs of the material in the nip of spreading rollers and cutting blanks from this. These are then placed on the face 21 (Fig. 3) of a form with the stretchable fabric closest to the form. The whole is placed in an autoclave and a vacuum applied through pipe 18 and channels 17. Steam pressure is generated in the autoclave and the laminate then allowed to cool to the shape of the form.
