Classes 97(1) and 97(2) An instrument sucl as a marine compass comprises a horizonta graduated scale and ai indicator movable rela tively to one another means for illuminating the scale, and an optica system, including c magnifying lens located above the illuminating means and below the scale and an eyepiece or window, for viewing a magnified image of the scale from vertically below, the magnifying lens being shaped so that no light directly reflected reaches the observer. In the form shown, the compass is illuminated through the transparent bottom 3 of the binnacle by a lamp 9 in a shield 7, the light being reflected from a mirror 11. The scale is viewed through a lens 5 which is a section of a plano-convex lens having a partannular shape in plan.
