Abstract

804,875. Endless conveyers. AETNA-STANDARD ENGINEERING CO. June 28, 1957 [July 10, 1956], No. 20487/57. Class 78 (1). [Also in Group XVI] Apparatus for classifying and piling tin sheets comprises a diverter 36, a conveyer 32 for delivering sheets successively at high speed to the diverter, two substantially parallel receiving conveyers 39, 42 adapted to receive sheets from the diverter, the diverter being adapted to divert sheets to one or the other of the receiving conveyers, means for operating the diverter to cause it to divert successive sheets delivered to it alternately to one of the receiving conveyers and then to the other receiving conveyer, and means for slowing down the sheets deposited on the receiving conveyers. Strip material S is passed through a micrometer gauge 10, a pin hole detector 11 and a shear cutter 12 where it is cut into sheets 15 and delivered to a conveyer 24 moving at a high speed sufficient to separate the sheets. Sheets rejected by the gauge 10 and detector 11 are deflected in known manner to a conveyer 28 moving at the same speed as conveyer 24, while the other sheets are passed to a conveyer 29, also moving at the same speed as conveyer 24. Sheets with defective surfaces are deflected on to a further fast moving conveyer 33, while prime sheets are passed at the same speed to the conveyer 32. A photo-electric cell causes operation of the deflector 36 each time a sheet is moved so that the prime sheets are alternately deflected to the conveyers 39 and 42 which run at half the speed of the conveyer 32. These conveyers deliver the sheets in shingled fashion on to slow-moving conveyers 41, 45 respectively for delivery to two piles 21, 20. The conveyers 28 and 33 pass the rejected sheets to two similar deflector arrangements 4 and 57 for delivery to four piles 16, 17 and 18, 19 respectively. Instead of the mechanically operated pivoted deflectors 36, 47 and 57 fixed deflectors may be employed, the sheets being alternately passed above and below the deflectors by the action of preceding upper and lower rolls embodying electromagnets alternately energized.
