Abstract

804,342. Discharge lamps. RANK CINTEL, Ltd., March 22, 1955 [March 23, 1954], No. 8445/54. Class 39(1). A flash discharge lamp comprises envelope portions 1, 2 joined by a capillary portion 3, the portions 1, 2 containing hollow cylindrical main electrodes 4, 5, and the portion 2 containing an auxiliary electrode 10 behind the main electrode 5. The auxiliary electrode 10 comprises a glass-coated wire and light from the auxiliary discharge is shielded from the main discharge along the capillary portion 3 by a diaphragm 12 across the main electrode 5. The electrodes 4, 5 are supported by leads 6, 7 terminating in conducting caps 8 and 9. The filling is a mixture of nitrogen and helium at 10 mms. pressure. A circuit arrangement for operating the lamp can be as described in Specification 804,343 [Group XXXV] which includes means for maintaining between the auxiliary electrode 10 and the main electrode 5 a small continuous discharge during periods when the lamp may be required to fire.
