Abstract

804,194. Vehicle lamps. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 19, 1956 [Jan. 16, 1956], No. 38679/56. Class 75(4) A headlamp system for motor vehicles consists of two lamps mounted side by side at one side of the vehicle, the first lamp having one light source at the focal point and a second light source offset from the focal point and the second lamp having a light source at the focal point only. Each lamp may have a parabolic reflector and a lens adapted to give a light distribution pattern having a disperse field of relatively low illumination and a concentrated field of relatively high illumination. In the construction, shown, the outer lamp 16, Fig. 2, has a filament 70 provided with a light shield 73 above it and mounted with one end at the focal point of the reflector 17 and extending to the left as viewed in the direction of the light beam, and a second filament 72 mounted symmetrically to the vertical through the focal point but slightly below this. The inner lamp 18 has a single filament arranged at the focal point of the reflector 19. The axis of the parabolic reflector of lamp 16 is displaced down and to the right when viewed in the direction of the beam. The lamps are arranged in a common casing 20 having cup shaped rear portions 30, 32, Fig. 3, with seating surfaces 34, 36 against which mounting rings 38, 40 for the lamps are held by coil springs, screws 58, 60 and 46, 48 being provided for adjustment of the rings for aiming the light beams. The filaments 72, 78 are connected to earth through conductors 80, 90 and to the contact 84 of a switch 86. The filament 70 is also earthed through the conductor 90 and is connected to the contact 96 of the switch 86. The switch 86 is cannected via a switch 100 to a battery 102, the other terminal of which is earthed. Figs. 7-10 (not shown) give diagrams of the resultant light distribution pattern.
