A machine for chipping wood comprises a rotary cutter 1 enclosed in a casing 2 having a chip-ejection opening 3 and a wood-feeding shoot 5 having an extension 8 which projects into a guide 4 extending from the casing, the cutter and shoot being relatively movable so that the extension pushes or backs up the portion of the wood being operated on by the cutter. As shown, the shoot 5 is slidable towards the cutter with its axis parallel to the cutter axis and with the end of the wood resting on the face 7 of the guide 4 but it may have a swivelling motion. The extension 8 is curved to correspond to the curvature of the cutter. Two shoots may be provided, one retracting while the other feeds towards the cutter.
