Abstract
803,584. Knitting. PATENTEX, Inc. Feb. 3, 1955 [Oct. 19, 1954), No. 3269/55. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group IX] Stretchable fabric is knitted from mono- or mufti-filament yarn of a thermoplastic polymer, e.g. nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or acrylonitrile, which has been heat-set at a temperature e.g. 265-270‹ F. higher than that required in any subsequent treatment of the yarn or fabric and twisted e.g. 10-50 turns per inch, to impart to the set yarn a degree of liveliness sufficient to cause the yarn to snarl if relaxed, optionally with some twist retained in the yarn. The yarn may have been pretwisted e.g. 20-60 turns per inch in similar or opposite direction to the twist applied after setting. When spooled yarn is delivered to the knitting machine it is unwound in a direction tending to impart twist opposite to the twist in the yarn, in order that the yarn may be free from snarls or knots at this stage. In knitting a stocking, oppositely twisted yarns may be fed separately to two carriers to enable these yarns to be knitted in alternating courses, as in the process of Specification 786,551. As shown, each spool is mounted on a shaft 18 suspended from a hanger 17 by means of a boss 19 and slot 20 and held thereon by a key 21 pivotable in a slot 23 ; yarn 16 is withdrawn over and around a detachable draw cap 13 so that a light controlling tension is applied. Control of the " liveliness " of the yarn may also be assisted by treating the yarn or package thereof with a thin oil or oily liquid which imparts temporary limpness.
