Abstract

Alumina-coated pigments are produced by mixing a pigment with an aluminium alcoholate or with aluminium phenate, and subjecting the mixture to dry grinding in the presence of superheated steam or water vapour, the aluminium compound being thereby hydrolysed. The process may be applied to any heat-stable pulverulent material, e.g. titanium dioxide, calcium and barium base pigments containing titanium dioxide, zinc sulphide, zinc oxide, or lithopone. Suitable aluminium compounds include aluminium methoxide, ethoxide, propoxide, isopropoxide, butoxide, isobutoxide, and pentanoxide, also aluminium phenate. The compound may be dissolved in an inert organic solvent and added, e.g. by spraying, to the pigment. Examples describe the treatment of titanium dioxide pigments with aluminium isopropoxide solutions followed by mixing in a hammer mill and pulverizing in a high fluid energy disintegrator using superheated steam as the distintegrating agent; and comparisons of the products with pigments similarly treated but without the addition of aluminium isopropoxide, and with titanium dioxide pigments coated by a wet process.
