Abstract

803,415. Electric selective signalling systems; electric weighing apparatus. HOBART MANUFACTURING CO. June 2, 1955 [June 11, 1954], No. 1482/57. Divided out of 803,413, [Group XIX]. Class 40 (1). In a weighing apparatus movement of a counterbalanced member 13, Fig. 1, is " followed " by a device comprising a motor 20 and two electrical contacts 14, 15, and as a result four discs 31, 43, 53, 54 are differentially positioned to represent the hundredths, tenths, units and tens denominations respectively of the weight of the article being weighed. The positions of the discs are sensed and digitalized by four associated multi-bank stepping switches W, X, Y and Z, Fig. 2, which also position pointers 92, co-operating with dials 91 to provide a visual indication of the weight, and type wheels 93 to enable a printed. record to be obtained. Each disc for example the hundredths disc 31, carries ten contacts 32, labelled 0 to 9 in Fig. 2, which are connected to the associated Z stepping switch as shown, and are sensed by a fixed sensing brush 33. When a weighing is complete, i.e. when member 13 is stationary, the Z stepping switch motor 70 is energized by suitable control mechanism, causing the switch contacts to advance until they are in a position corresponding to the position of the brush 33 relative to the contacts 32, when a relay 77 is energized stopping the motor 70. If the brush 33 is in contact with two of contacts 32 then the Z switch stops at the higher numbered contact. Once the Z switch has stopped the Y switch is operated in a similar manner, but if the Y brush stops in contact with two contacts the Y contacts only stop at the higher numbered contact if the Z switch is registering 0 to 4, otherwise they stop at the lower numbered contact. The other two switches then operate in turn resulting in a complete indication of the weight by switches W, X, Y and Z. Other banks of contacts on these switches are used for representing the weight in a circuit for calculating the cost of the article weighed once the unit cost has been manually registered on control switches.
