A weighing system comprises in combination a power-operated scale, a computer responsive to operation of the scale and to a manually entered price per unit weight, a printer and a ticket issuing machine for issuing a ticket recording the value and weight of the article being weighed, the system being characterized by a manual control which is only effective to cause a ticket to be issued when the article being weighed lies within a certain weight range and when the scale has completed its weighing. The system described comprises a scale, as described in Specifications 643,466 and 773,395, a computer similar to that described in Specification 803,413, a printer as described in Specification 808,235 and a ticket-issuing machine as described in Specification 809,719. In operation an article is placed on the scale, the price per unit weight is set on rotary switches, a control button is depressed and then a ticket recording the weight and price is issued. The computing system differs from that described in Specification 803,413 in that once the movement of the scale pan has been followed by a servo-mechanism, as described in Specification 808,549, to position rotary switches in accordance with the weight, the rotary switches control relays which record the weight (instead of, as in Specification 803,413, the rotary switches having their positions stored by further rotary switches). Fig. 16 shows the rotary switch for the one-hundredth digit of the weight. For each of its ten positions corresponding ones of relays 310-315 are energized, and the contacts of these relays effect the entry of the weight into the calculation which is done in the same way as that described in Specification 803,413.
