Abstract

803,252. Driving sound film, wire or tape. AMPEX CORPORATION. Jan. 2, 1957 [Jan. 6, 1956], No. 224/57. Class 40 (2). In a magnetic tape recorder means are provided for maintaining correct tape tension during rapid changes of speed. The capstan 12 (Fig. 1) is driven continuously by an electric motor and drives capstan 13 by friction. Rollers 22 cooperate with solenoids 23 to press the tape against one or other of the capstans and draw it across the face of the magnetic head 21. Between the capstans and the reels the tape passes over fixed rollers 26, 27 and 28 and movable rollers 29 and 30 carried by the swinging arms 31, which pivot about pins 47 and are spring- tensioned in a direction tending to increase the length of the loops. Each reel is driven by a motor 33 (Fig. 3) having two windings, one of which, 35, is continuously energized and the other, 34, is connected through a switch 42. Rapid change of tape speed causes variations in the amount of tape between the reels allowing the arms 31 to move. Each arm is mechanically connected to a switch 42 and closes either contacts 1 and 5 or one or more of contacts 1, 2, 3 and 4. This results in either reversal or change of speed of the motors until the arms 31 return to the mid-position. Operation of the switches 42 is damped by a dashpot to prevent hunting.
