Abstract

Fermentation or synthetic ethanol is purified by mixing the crude alcohol with an alkali metal sulphite, e.g. sodium sulphite, maintaining the sulphite in contact with the alcohol for a period (e.g. 10 hours) sufficient to allow it to react with impurities contained in the alcohol, and then subjecting the mixture to rectification. Potassium sulphite or lithium sulphite may also be used and, if the pH conditions allow, ammonium sulphite. Controlled pH conditions are suitably maintained, particularly in the case of yeast fermentations; e.g. a mixture of monosodium phosphate and disodium phosphate or a mixture of sulphuric acid and disodium phosphate, is preferably added, for maintaining the pH in the vicinity of the neutral point. In an example, molasses alcohol of 96 DEG G.L., having disagreeable taste and smell, is diluted to 70 DEG G.L.; and 10 grm. of pure sodium sulphite, Na2SO37H2O, are added per litre of alcohol. After a contact time of 10 hours between the sulphite and alcohol, the mixture is subjected to rectification. The carbonyl compounds are collected almost quantitatively in the head fraction. The middle fraction consists of 96 DEG G.L. alcohol of neutral smell and taste.
