Abstract

803,181. Knitting. SOCIETE DE L'USINE DE LA MARQUE. Nov. 8, 1956 [Nov. 8, 1955; Nov. 2, 1956], No. 34167/56. Class 74 (2). A grid of a material having characteristics which, especially as regards hardness and coefficient of friction, are substantially the same as those of the material of which the needle butts are made, guides the butts by reason of apertures aligned with the tricks of the needle bed, which bed is of a material such characteristics of which are substantially different from those of the butts. In the form of Figs. 2 and 4, the grid 13, made of a material (e.g. steel or bronze) having a hardness and a coefficient of friction of the same order as those of the needles, is secured to the needle bed by, at one end, a bar 9 recessed in a transverse slot in the bed, a clamp 11 and a screw 12 and, at the other end, a wedge 15 and a slot 14 in the bed. The needle bed itself may be of, say, a polyvinyl resin, polythene, a superpolyamide, an aluminium alloy or light metal, a copper alloy or wood; it is made up of elements 1, each provided with two rabbets, so that when the elements are bolted or cemented together each pair of contiguous rabbets forms a needle trick. Such trick emerges on one longitudinal face 3 of the needle bed, but stops short of the opposite face thereof, where each element has a projection 5 within which a unit of the slot 14 is formed. The needles slide with slight play in the tricks and bear against a cord 8 of felt or similar material, against which they are held by the bar 9. A rod 18 normally engages with a bend 19 in each of the needles, to hold them retracted. The cam carriage slides against the external face of the grid. In the modification of Fig. 5, the grid 13a is bent over along a line so positioned that, when the grid is secured to the face of the needle bed, the ends 22 of the apertures in the grid stand slightly proud of the bottoms of the tricks 2 of the bed. This bent-over end of the grid engages in a groove 25 in the bed and is secured in position by clamping jaws 26. Facing the cord 8 of felt or the like are two needleretaining strips 28 of steel, or the like arranged end to end in a dovetail recess in the bed such strip may be provided with a knob 29 serving as a handle and as a positioning abutment; and after sliding the appropriate strip out of the way, any needle may be removed without removing the grid. There are also provided a cam carriage guide 30, needlepositioning rod 18 and the coacting bends 19 in the needle stems. The needle bed may be in one unit or formed of juxtaposed elements, in which latter case the elements are aligned by a strip 27 of, say, steel, dovetailed into the rear end 24 of the bed.
