Abstract

802,911. Filter presses. ASSOCIATED PORTLAND CEMENT MANUFACTURERS, Ltd., BISHOP, L. H., and FOSTER, J. W. July 17, 1956 [July 21, 1955], No. 21193/55. Class 46. [Also in Group XXX] In a filter press of the type formed by a plurality of parallel plates which hang vertically and carry rollers on either side to allow them to move along guideways, the plates are separated into groups having chains joining adjacent plates and the end plate or master plate of each group is provided with gripping means to grip a travelling rope or chain which enables the plates of the press to be opened or closed. Fig. 3 shows one such master plate 9 which carries, on each side, a roller 10, and a chain 24 which connects the plates of the group. The gripping means, shown in detail in Fig. 4, comprises a two-armed lever 28 pivoted at 30 having a long arm 32, connected to rod 38, and a short arm 31 which can be made to grip the travelling rope 18 against a fixed jaw 27. The gripping means is controlled by a rod 42, Fig. 3, connected to a bell crank lever 41 connected to levers 34 which are in the form of triangular plates pivoted at 35, these levers being connected to the two-armed levers 28 through rods 37, 38. Lowering the rod 42 by the handle 48 causes the arm 31 of lever 38 to grip the rope 18 and on releasing the handle the gripping means is released by the action of counterweights 51 attached to the levers 34. A rod 48<SP>1</SP> connected to the right hand lever 34 has a lift arm 48 and shoulder 49 at the other end engaging a limit pin 50 to lock the mechanism so that the handle 44 cannot be operated on one side of the plate until an operator on the other side has lifted the arm 48 to release the locking mechanism. For simultaneous operation the gripping mechanisms on both sides of the plate are interconnected by rods 45, 46. In a modification the rope 18 is replaced by a chain, in which case the gripping means is provided by a rod movable vertically to engage between the links of the chain, the control mechanism being similar to the above.
