Abstract
802,886. Turf piercing machines, lawn mowers. LOUIS, R. G. July 25, 1957 [July 30, 1956], No. 23612/57. Classes 6(1) and 6(2). A machine for spiking lawns for attachment to a vehicle such as a lawn mower comprises a plurality of upright elements 15 slidably arranged in a frame structure 10 and adjustably attached to a cross-bar 17 movable in slots 16 in the frame 10 and reciprocated by means of crank pins 24 and connecting rods 18. The crank pins 24 are mounted on discs 25 driven by chain gearing 29 from a roller 4 of the lawnmower. The elements 15 may be provided with ends 31 of inverted conical shape or of chisel shape. The ends may be ragged to lift soil and roots. The frame 10 is fitted with slides 19 which engage guide bars 20 fixed to the mower, tension springs 21 being fixed between the slides 19 and bars 20 to draw the slides towards stops 23. When the elements are engaged in the ground the frame is moved rearwardly against the springs 21 until the elements are withdrawn from the ground. A cutter may be attached across the lower ends of the elements to cut clods. In a modification the frame may be pivoted about a horizontal axis, instead of being slidable in guide rods 20, spring means being provided to retain the frame in a vertical position but permitting rearward tilting of the lower end of the frame.
