Abstract
802,765. Electric motors. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 6, 1956 [Nov. 29, 1955], No. 27318/56. Class 35. [Also in Group XXVIII] In a refrigerator motor-compressor unit comprising a sealed casing 10 containing a motor having a stator 26 and a rotor 34, and a compressor driven by the motor and which draws refrigerant through the motor and discharges compressed refrigerant through an outlet pipe 76, the rotor carries a cup-shaped baffle 88 whose flange 94 is disposed adjacent an end of the stator windings 96 to form between it and said end an annular passage which guides refrigerant towards the rotor-stator air gap, whence the refrigerant is drawn through the gap. The baffle, whose central flange 90 is pressed on to an extension 92 of the drive shaft 30 and which rests on an annular ridge 89 of the rotor, has a raised portion 98 which permits refrigerant flow through rotor passages 56. An oil pump 86 irrespective of the direction of rotor rotation supplies lubricant under pressure through drive shaft passages 85 to the various motor-compressor assemblybearing surfaces. The casing comprises upper and lower cup-shaped members 14, 16 welded together along seam 18. The gas to be compressed, after flowing through a suction line 52, filter 54 and the motor, passes through passages 60, cylinder head chambers 64, suction ports 66 and spring flap valves 67 to two cylinders 46 where it is compressed by respective pistons 42 driven via connecting rods 40. The compressed gas flows through outlet ports 68 and valves 69, chambers 70 and passages 71 to the common outlet pipe 76.
