Abstract
802,403. Desiccants. COUNCIL OF SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. April 13, 1956 [April 14, 1955], No. 11349/56. Class 34(1) A desiccant is made from naturally occurring vegetable decomposition material, e.g. coal, by preparing an ion-exchanger product from the material and activating it by heating within a temperature range 100‹-110‹C. In a particularly described method an exchanger according to Specification 763,329 [Group IV(b)] is treated in a constantly stirred rotating drum with nearly 1¢ times its volume of 15-20 per cent solution of a mixture of (a) one of the salts, preferably chlorides of alkali or alkaline earth metals like Li, Na, K, CS, Mg, Sr, Ca, Ba, NH4 or quaternary ammonium compounds and (b) the corresponding hydroxide of the metal chosenthe ratio of (a) to (b) being 1:5. The solution passes through the drum via hollow shafts and the temperature in the drum should not exceed 70‹C. After this treatment the remaining solution is drained from the drum and the material left therein is flushed with demineralized water and taken out for air drying. The dried material is returned to the drum which is rotated whilst a 1 per cent sodium carbonate solution with a wetting agent e.g. triethanolamine is sprayed over the material. The product is then activited by passing hot air through the drum at 100‹-110‹C.
