802,110. Lathe details. WERNER, H. N. Sept. 21, 1956 [Oct. 6, 1955], No. 28893/56. Class 83 (3). A lathe-saddle 6 is movable on a bed 3 by a pinion 8, mounted on a vertical shaft 15 and supported at positions 9, 10 on an apron 7, meshing with a rack 4 attached to the bed 3. The meshing-surface is vertical and the teeth of the rack-and-pinion are preferably ground and of helical form. The pinion 8, coaxial with a wheel 11, driven by a wheel 12 through a feed-shaft 13, feeds the saddle for screw-cutting and surface-tooling. In a modification, the pinion 8, driven by a receiver motor of an electrical synchronizing or servo-system, moves the saddle longitudinally for screw-cutting, surfacetooling and rapid-traversing.
