Abstract

Dimethyl terephthalate is purified by vacuum distillation in the presence of an aliphatic glycol HO(CH2)nOH, where n is an integer from 2 to 8. The distillate is cooled and the glycol is separated from the purified solid ester by filtration with suction and is used again without purification. In the examples the distillation is carried out with (a) ethylene glycol; (b) propylene glycol; and (c) butylene glycol, under dry nitrogen and azeotropic vapours distil over at (a) 120 DEG C., (b) 120 DEG C. and (c) 134 DEG C. respectively.
