Abstract

A binder of a coating composition for paper comprises a salt of a copolymer of at least one alkyl acrylate with 2.5 to 7 per cent of at least one of itaconic acid, aconitic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, or the dimer or trimer of methacrylic acid, the said salt having a transition or inflection temperature (rigidity modulus) of 20 DEG C. or less. The alkyl group may have 1 to 4 carbon atoms. In an example (1), the copolymer is obtained by emulsion copolymerization of 87 parts of ethyl acrylate, 10.5 of methyl methacrylate, 2.5 of itaconic acid, 100 of water, 6 of t - octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol and small amounts of ammonium persulphate and sodium hydrosulphite as catalyst. Other hardening comonomers are ethyl, propyl, or butyl methacrylates, styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, vinyl acetate vinyl chloride, or vinylidene chloride, &c. Anionic or non-ionic emulsifying agents &c., e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate &c., may be used, and other free-radical catalysts are specified.
