Abstract

Class 29 Relates to a reversible compression refrigerating system having indoor and outdoor heat exchangers 18, 30 respectively for heating or cooling buildings and consists in providing multi-stage compression with means for by-passing one of the stages. For heating the building, a reciprocating compressor 14 is used in conjunction with a rotary compressor 10, although the two stages of compression may be combined in a single compressor, and compressed refrigerant passes to the indoor heat exchanger 18 acting as a condenser. Liquid refrigerant then flows to an accumulator 28, then through heat exchanger 44, expansion valve 46 and surge tank 42 to the outdoor heat exchanger acting as evaporator, from where gaseous refrigerant flows back through the surge tank 42 to the first compressor 10 For cooling, the compressor 10 is by-passed and compressed refrigerant flows first to the outdoor heat exchanger 30 acting as condenser to the accumulator 28, through the expansion valve 48 to the indoor heat exchanger 18 acting as evaporator, and hack to the compressor 14. An intercooler may be incorporated in the System providing heat exchange between gas passing from the low pressure to high pressure stage and condensed refrigerant flowing from the indoor to the outdoor heat exchangers.
