Abstract

A fire foam compound comprises hydrolysed "whale solubles" made into a concentrated solution with or without a stabilizer such as ferrous sulphate. In an example, 10 litres of "whale solubles," 5 litres of water and 500 grams of slaked lime were boiled for 2 hours and then 150 grams of concentrated sulphuric acid to which water had been added to bring the volume to 750 c.c. was mixed in, the acidified mixture being boiled for 30 minutes and then neutralized with 25 grams of caustic soda in water to give 50 c.c. of solution. The volume of the liquid was made up to 30 litres and filtered, the solid residue then being washed to provide a further amount of dilute liquid which was added to the filtrate, the combined filtrate and washings then being concentrated to 15 litres. The ferrous sulphate may be added before or after filtration. Other chemicals such as calcium chloride can be included during hydrolysis and other alkalis such as caustic soda can be used in place of lime. Hydrochloric acid can be used in place of sulphuric acid. The solids may also be separated by settling or centrifuging. According to the Specification, "whale solubles" is a liquid by-product obtained in the processing of whales for oil and meat, an average analysis comprising 43-50 per cent protein, 1-2 per cent fatty material, approximately 5 per cent ash and moisture to 100 per cent.
