Abstract

799,801. Windscreen cleaners. PLESSEY CO., Ltd. Nov. 21, 1955 [Nov. 22, 1954], No. 33719/54. Class 138(1). [Also in Group XXXI] Relates to the combination of a hydraulic windscreen wiper motor, with a vehicle hydraulic power assisted steering system of the kind in which liquid is circulated at an approximately constant rate of flow by means driven by the vehicle engine, whereby the wiper motor will operate at a speed substantially independent of engine speed. As shown, the vehicle engine 3 drives a hydraulic pump 1 associated with an oil reservoir 5 and a flow-control and pressure relief valve unit 6, which ensures the supply of oil to a pipe 7 at a substantially constant rate and thence to a steering control valve 8 actuated in known manner by the movements of the steering wheel 4. The control valve 8 passes oil to one side or the other of a double-acting power steering ram 9 in known manner and thus to a return pipe 10. The valve 8 and ram 9 are connected by a correspondence feed back connection 11 to the steering wheel 4. A throttle valve 12 is provided in the pipe 10 and by-passed by a pipe 15 and hydraulic motor 13 driving a windscreen wiper arm 14. The motor 13 being of known type and having automatic flow reversing means 13a. The motor may be stopped by fully opening the valve 12 but a three-way cock 16 may be provided to positively disconnect the motor 13 from the oil circulation and open a connection 12a by-passing both the motor 13 and the throttle 12.
