799,576. Feeding webs. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S (SUBMARINE CABLES), Ltd. June 23. 1955 [June 24, 1954], No. 18562/54. Class 100(1) An apparatus for regulating the tension of a tape 1 drawn from a coil 4 rotatable about its axis against the action of a constant braking force, comprises two parallel non-rotatable pins 25, 27 so disposed that the tape 1 passes from the coil round the pin 27 in one direction and from that pin round the pin 25 in the opposite direction, whereby, when the tape passes over the pins, friction between the tape and the surfaces of the pins brakes the tape, the pin 27 being planetarily adjustable about the pin 25 to vary the areas of contacts of the tape with the pins, and thus the braking force. The coil 4. mounted between discs 5 and 6, is braked by a brake 12. The periphery of the coil is engaged by a roller 21 carried by levers 20 secured to sleeves 18 rotatable on spindles 17. Each sleeve 18 carries a toothed quadrant 23 which engages a toothed wheel 24 rotatable on the base of the pin 25. The pin 27, carried by cranks 26, is rotated around the pin 25 due to actuation of the roller 21 upon a reduction in diameter of the coil 4. thus varying the arcs of contact of the tape 1 with the pins 25, 27. The apparatus may be used in a machine having a plurality of taping heads mounted in a rotatable cage, the core to be lapped being drawn along the axis of the cage.
