Oct. 22, 1956 [Nov. 5, 1955], No. 31696/55 Class 97(2) In a binnacle type compass of the kind wherein a periscope tube is provided on the underside of the binnacle to allow the compass (e.g. the lubber line and a portion of the compass card) to be viewed from below, the heeling magnet comprises a hollow cylinder or ring having holes at spaced intervals around its wall to receive magnets, the hollow cylinder or ring being positioned so that its bore affords a clear view of the compass. As shown, the binnacle comprises a non-magnetic cylinder 10 containing fore and aft correcting magnets and thwartship magnets 11 and the quadrantal spheres and Flinders bar. The binnacle assembly, having a transparent top 26 and containing a compass 12 having a shadow pin 27 to facilitate the taking of sun azimuths, is secured above a hole 13 in the wheelhouse roof 14 by an annular plate 15. A flanged cylinder 16 located in the hole 13 is provided with equally spaced axial bores each adapted to receive a cylindrical bar magnet 17. The ring 19 supports a magnifying lens and periscope assembly 20, 21, the periscope tube carrying an adjustable mirror 22 having locking means 25 to permit the compass card being viewed in the wheelhouse. A sighting means is attached to the periscope tube either above or below the mirror, and the tube is rotatable about its vertical axis.
