Abstract

Titanium pigments are produced in a readily dispersible condition by dry-grinding in the presence of from 0.005 to 0.5 per cent of a trialkanolamine and from 0.05 to 5 per cent of an aerogel. The trialkanolamine may be added as an aqueous solution; the aerogel which may be a silica aerogel is preferably added just prior to the amine. The grinding process may be carried out in a ball-, pebble- or rod-mill or the like, but the process is particularly useful in fluid energy mills. The examples all refer to grinding titanium dioxide pigments in a "Micronizer" (Registered Trade Mark) fluid energy mill in the presence of triethanolamine and a silica aerogel. Aerogels of oxides of aluminium, titanium and zirconium may also be used.
