Abstract

1,243,203. TiO 2 pigments. BRITISH TITAN Ltd. 16 April, 1969 [15 May, 1968], No. 22991/68. Heading C1N. Acid-reacting (i.e. having a pH <7.0 in aqueous suspension) TiO 2 pigment is neutralized (i.e. adjusted to pH 6À5-8À0) by heating at 150-350‹ C. in contact with a gas which is non-acidic and non-reactive to TiO 2 , mixing with aqueous alkali solution in an amount and for a time insufficient to slurry the TiO 2 , and further heating the TiO 2 in contact with the same or different non-acidic and non- TiO 2 -reactive gas at 150-350‹ C. Specified gases are steam, and air/steam or nitrogen/ steam mixtures. The amount of alkali used may be such that the treated TiO 2 contains less than 10% by wt. of H 2 O and the neutralized dry product contains 10-1000 p.p.m. of alkali. The alkali treatment may be effected by stirring the pigment with the alkali solution, or by spraying it on to the pigment. The TiO 2 may be treated, during the alkali treatment, gas heating or during a subsequent grinding step, with a coating agent such as a polyamine, an alkanolamine, or a polyol, e.g. pentaerythritol. In one example, Al 2 O 3 -coated TiO 2 from a gas-phase TiO 2 process is heated in steam before and after treatment with NaOH.
