Abstract

Centrifugal hydroclassification of titanium dioxide containing pigments is facilitated by forming an aqueous slurry to which an alkaline reacting agent is added to give a pH greater than 8 and then adding an acid reacting agent to give a pH of 6.6-7.6. The slurry so formed is used for hydroclassification. The alkaline reagents may be, aminomethylpropanol, monoisopropanolamine, sodium hydroxide, sodium phosphates, or sodium silicates. Acid reacting agents are mineral acids, or their salts, aluminium sulphate, titanium sulphate or zirconium sulphate. Concentration of titanium dioxide in the slurry to be classified is preferably within 300-600 gm./litre. Specifications 456,420 and 944,216 are referred to.ALSO:In the hydroclassification of titanium dioxide containing pigments a modified Bird centrifuge is used. The conventional Bird centrifuge is described in British Patent 456,420. In the modified form the screw conveyer is made fast with the horizontal arbor for rotation therewith, and the arbor is hollowed out to pass a feed pipe which extends inwardly to a predetermined point, for example a point half way along the centrifuging bowl. The portion of the arbor that surrounds the inner extremity of the feed pipe, and the adjacent portion of the conveyer mounting are slotted to provide communication between the feed pipe and the bowl. In operation a slurry of the pigment is fed into the feed pipe and screw conveyer and centrifuging bowl are driven so that they rotate in the same direction. Specification 944,216 also is referred to.
