In a calculating-machine typewriter combinaation, e.g. as described in Specification 766,092, wherein the differential members 51 of the calculating-machine adjust contact sliders 11 over digit contact bars 14 connected to operating magnets 25 for the typewriter numeral keys, whereby successive digits of an item or total are typed as a wiper 17 on the typewriter carriage picks off successive orders through connections 15 with contact rails 13 for the sliders 11, a detent is provided which is adapted to retain the contact sliders in their adjusted positions until typing of the item has been completed, the differential members 51 meanwhile being free for return to their normal positions so that the calculating machine can immediately resume operation. As shown in Fig. 2, the differential members 51 have ears 64 by which they carry forwardly slidable bails 60 carrying the contact sliders 11. A pivotal latch plate 57 formed with ratchet teeth engages pawls 58 on the sliders to retain them in digit set position against the action of return springs 62. After the last digit has been typed, the wiper 17 on the typewriter carriage passes over a contact A. located at the termination of each computing column, and this energizes a magnet 53 to rock the latch plate 57 and release the contact sliders 11 for return by their springs 62.
