Abstract

799,046. Laminates; seaming. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 25, 1956 [June 29, 1955], No. 18784/55. Classes 42 (1) and 140. A surface of a fibre-forming polyethylene terephthalate polymer is bonded to a surface of a similar polymer by forming a liquid or tacky film comprising a chloroacetic acid between the surfaces to be bonded and pressing the surfaces together. Dichloracetic acid per se and solutions of mono- or tri-chloroacetic acid in trichloroethylene or orthochlorophenol may be used to bond the materials at room temperature or at elevated temperature while aqueous solutions of mono- and tri-chloroacetic acid may be used to bond the material at temperatures between 100‹ and 200‹ C. A fibreforming polyethylene terephthalate polymer may be dissolved in the fluid chloroacetic acid. High frequency heating methods may be used. Film bags and film-wrapped cartons may be made by overlapping the materials and seaming by this method.
