Abstract

798,591. Turning-gear. INNOCENTI SOC. GENERALE PER L'INDUSTRIA METALLURGICA E MECCANICA. April 26, 1956 [Dec. 21, 1955], No. 12798/56. Class 7(5) [Also in Group XXIV] In a starting device particularly for motor-cycle engines comprising a toothed segment 1 keyed to the shaft 2 of a starting pedal 3, a toothed pinion 4 mounted for rotation and axial displacement on a pinion shaft 5, the segment being out of mesh with the pinoin and being adapted to engage the pinion on actuation of the pedal, a member 18 operable by the pinion and coupled for rotation with the engine shaft, dog-clutch means between the member and pinion comprising ratchet teeth on the member and pinion, spring means 9 urging the pinion axially towards the member, and a false tooth 30 on the leading end of the segment, each ratchet tooth on one component of the clutch is formed with an axial recess 18a on the torsionally inoperative flank 18e which recess is angularly spaced from the torque transmitting flank 18c of the tooth whereby a ratchet tooth on the other component of the clutch is seated in the recess in the inoperative condition of the device with the torque transmitting flank 4a thereof angularly spaced from the flank 18c. As shown, the tooth 30 is formed from wire of circular cross-section and is arranged on the segment 1 so that the coiled free end thereof is angularly spaced from the radial axis of the leading tooth by a distance equal to the pitch of the teeth. In operation actuation of the pedal 3 to rotate the segment causes the tooth to engage the pinion 4 thereby to rotate the latter through an angle 1, Fig. 3, so that smooth meshing occurs between the segment and pinion. The ratchet teeth on the extension 18 are formed on the inclined torsionally inoperative flanks thereof with recesses 18a the bottoms of which are displaced with respect to the bases 18b of the torque transmitting flanks 18c, the latter being undercut with respect to the axis of the clutch; the flanks 4a on the pinion are also undercut. The clutch may be provided between the pinion and the spindle 5, the bevel gear wheel 8 which meshes with a corresponding gear wheel on the engine shaft being keyed to the shaft 5.
