Abstract

798,280. Moulding upholstered parts for vehicle bodies. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd. Jan. 3, 1957 [Jan. 27, 1956], No. 2798/56. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XIV] Relates to trim pads for upholstering vehicle bodies comprising a backing 16 of wood or the like, papier mache or a synthetic resin, padding 17 of wadding or foamed rubber or synthetic resin, and a facing layer 18 of leather or the like or synthetic resin, the layers being welded together in a defined pattern by a heated die 194 to form valleys as shown in Fig. 5, thermoplastic or thermosetting strips being interposed if necessary. According to the invention, the die also welds into the valleys a piping 154 of thermosetting or thermoplastic material preferably of a contrasting colour. The die is formed with a recess 22 to receive and mould the piping. As shown the piping has a recess 23 taking over a projection 24 to hold it temporarily in place but it may be a push fit in recess 22 or be held therein by suction. Alternatively it may be temporarily attached in the valleys. The piping may present three longitudinal ribs or may have a trapezium cross-section.
