Abstract
Ethylene diamine is prepared by leading hydroxyacetonitrile, or the crude product obtainable from aqueous formaldehyde and hydrocyanic acid, with excess ammonia and hydrogen under an increased pressure and at an elevated temperature over a hydrogenation catalyst. Preferred catalysts are metals of the 6th to 8th groups of the Periodic System or mixtures thereof, in particular cobalt or nickel alone or in admixture with metals of the 6th and/or 7th groups, such as chromium or manganese. The catalyst may be supported on carriers such as aluminas, silicates and silica gel. Temperatures may range from 20 DEG to 300 DEG C., pressures from 50 to 500 atmospheres and excesses of hydrogen and ammonia from 50 to 500 mols. for each mol of hydroxyacetonitrile. Diluents such as methanol, ethanol, tetrahydrofuran and dioxane may also be present. Diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine and higher polyamines are formed as by-products.
