Abstract

The invention comprises a process for the production of m- or p-xylylene diamines by hydrogenating isophthalonitrile and/or terephthalonitrile in the liquid phase in the presence of ammonia over a nickel or cobalt catalyst. The catalysts are preferably Raney nickel or Raney cobalt, and they may be deposited on alumina or carbon. Solvents such as toluene, methanol, ethanol, dimethyl formamide or water may be present, and it is preferable to use at least two mols. of ammonia to one mol. of dinitrile. The reaction is preferably carried out between 70-120 DEG C. at 50-200 atmospheres and the xylylene diamines may be recovered by distillation, to remove ammonia and solvents, followed by vacuum distillation of the residue. Examples are given.
