Abstract

Colloidal solutions or solvent latices of graft polymers comprise particles of graft copolymer in an organic medium wherein one chain of the copolymer is soluble and the other component chain of the copolymer is insoluble in the medium, the insoluble chain of the copolymer being kept in suspension by the solubility of the soluble chain. Examples of such graft polymers are the polymers of Specification 788,651, e.g. rubber-methyl methacrylate. The solutions or latices may be made by dissolving a graft polymer in a solvent for both component chains and adding sufficient of a non-solvent for one of the chains such that this component only becomes insoluble in the mixture of solvent and non-solvent. For rubber-methyl methacrylate, benzene-methanol or xylene-methanol may be used. The solutions which may or may not have vulcanizing agents added may be diluted, e.g. with methyl ethyl ketone, and sprayed to form a film or coating.ALSO:Colloidal solutions or solvent latices of graft polymers comprise particles of graft copolymer in an organic medium wherein one chain of the copolymer is soluble and the other component chain of the copolymer is insoluble in the medium, the insoluble chain of the copolymer being kept in suspension by the solubility of the soluble chain.
