Abstract
A heel seat and shoe shank stiffening member is moulded from fibrous or woven material, such as glass or asbestos fibres impregnated with a thermosetting resinous compound, such as a phenol-formaldehyde resin, to have a hard central area, which may include a ductile member such as a strip of soft iron, and a less hard peripheral area to receive fastening means. Shaped and impregnated felt layers with the fibres lying in selected directions are placed in suitably shaped moulds and subjected to heat or heat and pressure to cure the central area rock hard while the general shaping is effected. The heating is preferably by a high frequency electric field the electrodes producing which are adjustably placed in the upper mould. As a second stage the peripheral areas are partially aired under reduced pressure and electric resistance heating. In some cases the second stage may be omitted conduction of heat from the central area or pressure differences being relied on to produce reduced hardness towards the edges. The stiffening member may alternatively be moulded in a single operation from a heterogeneous mass of fibres and thermosetting resinous material, the ductile member being located centrally by dowels extending from the bottom mould.
